Race to the Alamo: Race Day 3 Recap

RD3-1

Race day three kicked off Saturday morning with a trip to the “Heart of the City,” also known as San Fernando Cathedral. After a short tour of what used to be the center of San Antonio, the teams were off to San Jose Mission to begin the first of four challenges for the day.

RD3-2

For their first challenge, teams were asked to make a one minute video showcasing the San Jose Mission with their iPad.  After posting the videos YouTube, teams had until 3:30 p.m. to get as many video views as possible. With Adventurous Kate and Trekaroo capping out at around 300 views, a tie was awarded for first with Healthy Voyager following behind.

Next stop La Villita!

RD3-3

Upon arrival to La Villita, teams were taken to Bonsai Arbor for a lesson in sculpting and caring for bonsai trees from shop owner Sherry Disdier. After their lesson, teams were given the task to trim and sculpt a Japanese Garden Juniper into a beautiful bonsai in only 15 minutes!  Each team had two trees to be sculpted and judged as a set.  Coming in first for their element of balance was Healthy Voyager, followed by Adventurous Kate, and Trekaroo.

RD3-4

With no time to slow down, the teams headed off to the Buckhorn Museum! Upon their arrival, they received a set of questions whose answers were hidden throughout the museum. After an intense race throughout the Buckhorn, Trekaroo made it back first with all the right answers, followed by Healthy Voyager and Adventurous Kate.

After a full morning of racing, the teams got a break to enjoy superb Mexican food at the legendary Mi Tierra’s! Then, it was off to the final challenge for the day, and a true race to the finish.

RD3-5

After lunch, teams were taken to the top of the Tower of the Americas. Upon arriving to the observation deck, they were instructed to search for their next clue. As each team found their clue, the race to the Alamo was on!  Teams scrambled down from the tower, to their vans, and over to the Alamo to Samba!

Final Challenge:  The Samba Vida Challenge

RD3-6

As teams arrived to the Alamo, they dressed in pieces of the Samba Vida costume, learned a drum routine, and recruited others to join them in a conga line all the way to the Alamo! Coming in first with 32 people in their line was team Healthy Voyager.  Team Trekaroo ended second with 29 people in their line followed by Adventurous Kate with 15 people.

RD3-7

The third race day wrapped up with a tie for the lead between Trekaroo and Healthy Voyager, plus a full day of fun events at these places:

Saturday’s winners, Team Trekaroo and Team Healthy Voyager both won a TUMI luggage set! Also, each team won prizes for their readers including a copper luminaria, Mi Tierra apron and a burner with scent chips from La Villita.

To finish off the race and say good-bye to San Antonio, the teams enjoyed a closing dinner at Achiote.

Race to the Alamo: Race Day 2 Recap

RD2-1

The second day of the Race to the Alamo kicked off Friday with two challenges at the San Antonio Zoo! The first challenge required teams to spell out LA CANTERA in order using the names of animals they found throughout the zoo. After an hour of racing, each team was able to locate all the animals they needed to spell out La Cantera.

RD2-2

For the second zoo challenge, teams entered Lory Landing equipped with cups of nectar. Not only did they have to try to entice as many lorikeets as possible to land of them, but also had to take a photo before the birds flew away. After reviewing the photos, Trekaroo came in first with five lorikeets, followed by Adventurous Kate with four, then Healthy Voyager with three.

After a long morning of racing, the teams were given some time to relax and go shopping at the Shops of La Cantera.  Here, teams got a taste of southwestern food during their lunch at Z Tejas. The break was short lived and soon the race was back on!  Next stop the Institute of Texan Cultures.

RD2-3

At the Institute, teams had a two part challenge. First, they had to race around the museum finding the answers to questions about Texas history and culture. Coming back first with all the correct answers was Adventurous Kate, followed by Healthy Voyager, then Trekaroo.  As a result, each team behind Adventurous Kate was given a late start for the next part of the challenge.

RD2-4

Part two of the challenge required each team to lasso a metal steer.  First out the door was Adventurous Kate. On the first try, one member of the Adventurous Kate team was able to lasso the metal steer! Next out the door was Healthy Voyager, followed by Trekaroo, and the race was back on. By the end of the challenge, team Adventurous Kate finished first, followed Healthy Voyager and then Trekaroo.

The second race day wrapped up with Adventurous Kate in the lead with a full day of fun events at these places:

For their win, team Adventurous Kate, was taken to Stinson Airport for Helicopter Tour! In addition, the team received a Translator and a basket filled with Texas wine and other goodies. Each team also won prizes for their readers including a Molcajete, Margarita Glasses from Market Square, and the Los Barrios Cookbook.
