La Villita Historic Arts Village

la villita logo

Tucked away in the heart of downtown San Antonio, La Villita’s unique buildings capture the imagination or shoppers, tourists, and history buffs alike. Run by local San Antonio artists, the area contains 26 shops, galleries and restaurants with none of the crowds of normal shopping districts. Since La Villita is located in a park, there are great open spaces for children to play in and it makes for a great spot to walk around and enjoy the scenery and shade of the giant oak trees.

Many of the shops have been there for years and their owners can tell you about the interesting history behind the area, buildings, and the historic people who have lived and worked there over the centuries. Wander around and experience all the beautiful artwork displayed and for sale in the authentic, historic setting. Each store carries a map that shows where each shop is located so visitors can easily find exactly what they are looking for.

The great history of the location can be explored by picking up a pamphlet and taking a walking tour of the sites. The historical significance of each of the buildings is explained and visitors really get the feeling that they are being transported to another place and time. For additional information, all of the artists are happy to answer questions or just strike up a conversation.

Drury Plaza

Drury Plaza Lobby

For a spectacular view of the city, one only has to visit the pool on top of the Drury Plaza hotel, whose 23rd story pool deck offers unobstructed views with no other tall buildings around. With their indoor pool being the only one in downtown San Antonio, the Drury Plaza offers two of the most unique swimming experiences in Texas.

While the hotel opened in 2007, the building was originally constructed as the Alamo National Bank in 1929, with all the historical effects and original beauty preserved when it was renovated to become the hotel. The converted bank lobby, which is now the front desk, provides a grand entrance into the hotel for guests to check in and begin their stay.

A great value for traveling with kids, the Drury Plaza provides a free hot breakfast with more than just your basic muffin and coffee. With scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, sausage, and so much more, their breakfast is a filling way to start each day exploring the wonderful sites in San Antonio. In the evening, their 5:50 kick-back provides free hot food that many use as their dinner, along with drinks and a chance to relax after a long day out seeing all the historic sites that San Antonio has to offer.
