Mariachi music is to San Antonio what cajun music is to New Orleans; folklore music that is embedded in the culture reflecting the uniqueness of the Alamo City. That’s why Mariachi Las Alteñas was invited to join Mayor Julian Castro at the studios of ABC’s Good Morning America to help unveil the San Antonio window on display through the end of December. Mariachi Las Alteñas performed a beautiful mariachi rendition of Feliz Navidad and Sleigh Ride during the unveiling televised nationally.

Hundreds of mariachi musicians live and work in San Antonio and perform regularly at family and holiday celebrations such as weddings and birthdays as well as live concert settings and in local Mexican restaurants. The music is often festive and uplifting with songs that sing about love. Young and mature men and women play in mariachi groups of up to 12 members with instruments that include the violin, guitar, vihuela, trumpet, guitarron and harp.

San Antonio serves as host to one of the largest and longest running mariachi music festivals in the U.S. attracting thousands of people to the Alamo City every year. The event is traditionally held the first weekend of December. For more information log on to mariachimusic.com.
