Mariachi Las Alteñas will perform for students at the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem this afternoon while students are treated to a piñata party and Mexican food demonstrations by Blanca Aldaco, owner of Aldaco’s Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio. Mariachi Las Alteñas are in New York as part of the unveiling of the San Antonio window now on display at the studios of Good Morning America on Times Square through the end of December.

Mariachi Las Alteñas is one of San Antonio’s best all-female professional mariachi groups made up of 5 violins, 2 trumpets, 1 vihuela, 1 guitar and 1 guitarron. Members include violinists Valerie Vargas, Angela Campos, Carla Ramirez, Sandra Gonzalez and Rhonda Garcia. Corina Cantu and Amanda Balarin are featured trumpet players with Vanessa Moreno on the vihuela, Amanda Lozano on the guitarron and Katherine Garcia on the guitar.

Several of the group’s members are students or graduates of the University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas State University in San Marcos and teach orchestra and mariachi music in local schools. The group is looking forward to performing for young kids ages 6-11 at the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem.
