The San Antonio Zoo, the third largest in the nation, started in 1914 when Colonel George W. Brackenridge placed buffalo, elk, deer, monkeys, a pair of lions, and four bears on the land he gave to the city, which is known as the Brackenridge Park. Built into the side of an old limestone quarry cliff, this 35 acre zoo is open 365 days a year and has over 3,500 animals of 600 different species. With exhibits for all ages, the newest exhibit, Africa Live!, features close-up views of hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles along with the Nanyuki Market, modeled after an African street market. A mini-zoo for kids under five, Kronkosky’s Tiny Tot Nature Spot, lets children dig and play as they learn about natural wonders.
